[01] ND on labour relations
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party spokesman Panos
Panagiotopoulos said on Tuesday referring to the Presidential Decree on
labour relations that the "hide-and-seek game played by the government
and the publicity stunts it engages in should end."
Panagiotopoulos underlined that the government was forced to abandon
the Presidential Decree procedure under pressure from the opposition
and public opinion and stressed that "legislation of that kind has to
be passed in parliament".
He stressed that greater flexibility in labour relations is regarded as
"useful by the ND under the precondition that the workers' rights will
be safeguarded combined with a policy that will support development and
boost economic activity."
"ND will wait for Labour Minister Andreas Loverdos' formal briefing and
calls on the government to clarify its positions," Panagiotopoulos
said.
He added that ND is in favor of the social insurance system's reform
and the adoption of structural changes stressing, however, that the
viability of the social insurance system must be guaranteed.
