[01] Lake Melissani: The lake of the nymph
The summer sun rises and light enters from the rooftop, reflected by
the waters of Lake Melissani, the lake of the nymph Melissanthi, that
turn the light into a breathtaking kaleidoscope of colors on the cave's
rocks.
According to myth, the nymph Melissanthi cast herself off the rocks to
the lake when the god Pan rejected her. The lake is situated two km
outside of the town of Sami, central-western Cephalonia. The cave-lake
was discovered in 1951, and the waters are a mixture of sea and fresh
water. A tour of the lake is possible by boat and the visitors may swim
in the cold waters
