  • [01] ND calls for measures against crime wave

(ANA-MPA) -- Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras on Tuesday visited a police precinct in the central Athens district of Patissia in the wake of what the opposition and press criticised as a particularly violent weekend in the greater Athens area.

The particular police department has jurisdiction over the site where presumed ultra-leftist urban terrorists planted a bomb on Sunday evening that inadvertantly killed a 15-year-old Afghan (ANA-MPA) teen and severely injured his 11-year-old sister. The two minors, along with their mother, were reportedly sifting through trash bids in the area, one of Athens most congested districts.

Samaras was briefed by the precinct chief over the situation in the area, (ANA-MPA) including the murder of a betting pools owner during an armed robbery and the bomb attack.

[02] 'Holy Light' to arrive in Athens from Jerusalem on Sat.

(ANA-MPA) -- The "Holy Light" from the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Jerusalem will be transferred to Athens on Bright Saturday (Orthodox Easter) with a government executive flight via Tel Aviv.

The aircraft will arrive at Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport at 18.30 and will be received with heads of state honors.

The "Holy Light" will reach even the most remote place in the country on special flights by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, as well as on board Hellenic Air Force C-130 transport planes and helicopters.

    [03] PPC reports impressive turnaround

(ANA-MPA) -- Public Power Corporation (PPC), Greece's state-run electricity utility, on Tuesday reported pre-tax profits of 993.1 million euros last year, after losses of 395.9 million euros in 2008. The utility added that after-tax earnings totaled 693.3 million euros, up from a loss of 305.9 million euros over the same periods, respectively.

[04] Stocks end 1.95 pct down

A widening spread in the Greek state bond market negatively affected share prices in the Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday and pushed the composite index of the market below the 2,100 level. The index ended 1.95 pct lower, at 2,095.64 points, with turnover a low 145.827 million euros.

The FTSE 20 index dropped 2.19 pct, the FTSE 40 index fell 1.81 pct and the FTSE 80 index ended 1.08 pct down. The Travel (1.04 pct) and Commerce (0.93 pct) sectors scored gains, while Financial Services (3.68 pct) and Utilities (3.47 pct) suffered the heaviest percentage losses of the day. Broadly, decliners led advancers by 125 to 50 with another 43 issues unchanged.

Interfish (10 pct), Akritas (9.80 pct), Allatini Ceramics (9.59 pct) and Ippotour (8.70 pct) were top gainers, while Hatzioannou (13.79 pct), Q&R (9.09 pct) and Varagis (8.64 pct) were top losers.
