BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/V. Demiris) - New Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn, speaking before a relevant European Parliament committee here on Monday, reiterated that there was no question of Greece leaving the eurozone.

Replying to MEPs' questions, Rehn said the Greek government, which will present the Commission with a policy package on decreasing its double-digit budget deficit, is committed to solving this problem with seriousness.

He added that the Commission is watching the situation in Greece with some concern and added that in January and February decisions will be taken over whatever the next steps.

Rehn also said that the eurozone's stability is not being threatened by Greece's case, but stressed that action must be taken soon in Greece to prevent a worsening of the situation.

Replying to another question on Greece's statistical figures, Rehn said Greece constitutes an extraordinary case and that serious problems exist that must be dealt with.

The Commissioner further stressed that the Commission and Eurostat are supporting Greece with the measures it is taking, insisting, in parallel, on the need for correct and reliable data to be conveyed to EU services.
