[01] Ferry towed back to port after engine problem
A catamaran-type ferryboat reported engine problems on Monday morning
after departing the Saronic isle of Poros island en route for the port
of Piraeus. The vessel, identified as the "Flying Cat 1", was initially
adrift with 195 passenger on board before being towed safely back to
Poros. Passengers disembarked and were transported to Piraeus by bus.
[02] Fire-fighting aircraft reports engine failure; crew safe
A fire-fighting aircraft operating over northwestern Attica reported an
engine failure during its water replenishment off the Schinias beach in
northeast Attica prefecture. According to the air force, the plane's
port pontoon was also detached. The aircraft remained on the water's
surface and the crew was not in danger.
[03] Evacuation of coastal resort
Western Attica prefecture authorities on Monday ordered the immediate
evacuation of the coastal resort of Porto Germeno -- northwest of the
greater Athens area -- due to a raging wildfire on nearby Mt.
Kitheronas. The blaze mysteriously erupted late Sunday afternoon,
following scores of large and small wildfires that were reported over
the weekend.
Meanwhile, a fire engire caught fire at the Pikermi site, east of
Athens, amid fire-fighting efforts in the township.
[04] ASE opening: Rise
Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Monday on the
Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index up 1.64
percent, standing at 2,520.60 points at 10:45 a.m., and turnover at
43.5 million euros.
Individual sector indices were moving mostly upward, with the biggest
gains in Banks, up 3.00 percent; Financial Services, up 1.70 percent;
and Technology, up 1.63 percent.
The biggest losses were in Media, down 1.82 percent; and Food and
Beverages, down 0.46 percent.
The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up
2.05 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.92 percent, and the
FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 1.21 percent.
Of the stocks moved, 94 were up, 17 were down, and 16 were unchanged.
