  • [01] New university in Agrinio

A new University of Western Greece will be established in the town of Agrinio as a fully independent higher education institution, according to an amendment tabled in Parliament on Thursday.

The amendment notes that the possibility will also be provided for choosing the seats of new schools, departments and other branches in other municipalities in the region.

Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros responded on Friday to charges that main opposition PASOK party spokesman George Papaconstantinou made a day earlier, who said that "every day that passes with the New Democracy party is a lost day and had presented certain negative indexes in the economy."

"PASOK has lost many days until realising what is happening all over the world. It appears that it is beginning to understand and in this way it can read certain figures as well," Antonaros said, terming the fact that Papaconstantinou realises the existence of an international economic crisis and that it has consequences for Greece likeable.

"If he took the trouble to compare the figures that he mentions for Greece, with figures of other comparable or bigger countries of Europe, he will ascertain that the consequences for Greece are smaller," he pointed out, while for shipping in particular he noted that it is in a crisis on an international scale and it would not be possible for Greek commercial shipping not to be affected as well.

Asked to comment on statements by Papaconstantinou on Thursday, Antonaros said that he does not consider at all funny the issue arising following PASOK's letter to the lawyers of Christoforakos.

"This politically unwise and legally unprecedented for international judicial annals initiative by Mr. Papandreou is very regrettable, wanting at all cost, he personally, since he took the decision, to become officially and with his party's seal the interlocutor of a defendant who is wanted by our country," Antonaros stressed.
