  • [01] Karamanlis addresses congratulatory letter to new NATO Secretary General

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis addressed a congratulatory letter to Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the assumption of his duties as NATO Secretary General.

    Karamanlis expressed certainty that the Alliance under Rasmussen will continue its course toward transformation, maintain its ability to meet new challenges and proceed successfully with a new consensus that will reaffirm NATO's role in the 21st century.

    In view of the imminent visit of the new NATO Secretary General to Athens this month, the prime minister expressed the certainty that the excellent cooperation they shared will continue.

    [02] Decline in international tourist arrivals

    A decline of 8 pct was recorded in international tourist arrivals in Greece's major international airports for the period Jan.-July, 2009 compared to the same period last year, the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) said on Friday.

    The decline is smaller than the 9.6 pct drop recorded in Jan.-June, 2009 compared to the same period in 2008

    [03] Stocks slip on Friday

    Stocks slipped on Friday at the Athens Stock Exchange with the composite index of the market losing 0.85 pct to end at 2,380.58 points. Turnover was a very low 159.1 million euros, of which 4.3 million were block trades.

    Sector indices moved mostly upward in Construction (1.73 pct) and Insurance (1.27 pct). Health (4.47 pct), Food and Beverages (3.56 pct) and Technology (1.43 pct) recorded the biggest losses.

    The FTSE 20 index ended 0.66 pct down, the FTSE 40 index 1.07 pct down and the FTSE 80 dropped 0.42 percent.

    From the stocks moved, 80 ended up, 122 declined and 55 remained unchanged.
