[01] EEC Directive for return of cultural objects to Greece
A total of 49 ancient coins were returned to Greece during the period
2004-2007 following an amicable settlement within the framework of the
EEC directive for the return of cultural goods unlawfully removed from
the territory of a member state.
One of the coins was returned from Britain and the rest from Sweden.
A European Commission report assessing the implementation of Council
Directive 93/7/EEC calls for its amendment to make its implementation
more effective mostly by simplifying procedures, broadening the list of
goods it concerns and improving administrative cooperation at European
level, which has been a Greek request.
The same report mentions that in 2007 Germany notified Greece of three
confiscations made on its territory, which among others, concerned 90
ancient objects that were unlawfully removed from Greece and were
scheduled to be returned in 2009.
Greece has filed applications with all competent authorities in the
states where the directive is implemented requesting a search for 439
cultural objects stolen from churches and monasteries but the outcome
was negative.
