  • [01] Papandreou slams government welfare policy

Visiting the Foundation of Social Insurance (IKA) offices and surgeries in the Athens district of Agioi Anargyroi on Thursday, main opposition PASOK's leader George Papandreou slammed the government's policies for welfare as completely unacceptable.

"Through their policy they have under-funded the social insurance funds, they have given 'gifts', through contributions, to large businesses and banks," he said.

He also referred to widespread corruption and mismanagement in the health sector and the social insurance funds, which resulted in the basic rights of those insured being trampled on, such as in a recent freeze on pensions.

Papandreou went on to criticise the "barbaric inconvenience" to which the insured, pensioners and the aged were subjected to through the slipshod organisation of newly introduced social insurance registration numbers, in addition to rampant bureaucracy and other burdens upon them.

PASOK's leader pledged to protect the rights of all citizens to a decent pension, a viable social insurance system and to live with dignity.
