  • [01] PASOK on farmers, elections

Main opposition PASOK party spokesman George Papaconstantinou on Thursday stressed that the government had failed to convince farmers with its measures, "regardless of the fact that some of them choose forms of protests other than the roadblocks,? adding that the governmentâs ?lack of credibility has reached new heights?.

Papaconstantinou also accused the rural development and foods minister of attempting to blame PASOK for the road blockades.

He expressed the hope that the 500 million euros of compensation to farmers will not run foul of the European Commission, pointing out that it is the governmentâs duty to negotiate in favor of the country and the people.

He commented that PASOK is ready for elections, reiterating that Euro-elections will take the form of a referendum if no early elections are held.

Regarding Fridayâs meeting between PASOK leader George Papandreou and Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) parliamentary group leader Alekos Alavanos, he commented that they will focus on youth and education issues.

Meanwhile, PASOK MPs have sent a letter to the head of Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee Costas Agorastos, asking that the committee be convened and briefed on the measures being taken to deal with the economic crisis by the finance minister.

In the letter, PASOK MP Louka Katseli, in charge of economic issues, charges that the 2009 budget has already been overturned after the exceptionally negative forecasts of the European Commission regarding growth and fiscal indices for the Greek economy over the current year. PASOK also seeks a briefing on the 2008-2011 Stability and Development Programme that the government is soon to submit to the European Commission.
