World famous film director Jules Dassin died on Monday afternoon at the age of 97. Dassin opted to live in Greece after his marriage with late Greek actress and politician Melina Mercouri.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis made the following statement:

"Greece grieves the loss of a rare person, of an important creator and real friend. We grieve the loss of a first generation Greek who along with his companion, late Melina Mercouri, never stopped to actively show his love for everything superb and real in this country. For those of us who had the honour of meeting him personally, the passion, his creative energy, his militantism and his politeness will never be forgotten. For the generations of his Greek compatriots of tomorrow, his multi-faceted work will remain a living legacy," Karamanlis said.
