[01] PASOK leader says âcorruption rattles the countryâ
Main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) leader George
Papandreou addressed an event in Athens on Monday evening, organized by
the Greek section of ?International Transparency?, on the theme ?State
and Corruption?.
?Either we strike a blow against the phenomenon of corruption in
Greece, or it will choke all of us. Our country is rattled by phenomena
of corruption,? Papandreou said.
?Corruption has particular consequences to the average and poorer
citizen. Corruption is a source of striking social and economic
inequality and injustice. It undermines the democratic institutions and
finally the democratic rights of every Greek citizen. There is an
enormous concentration of power and fabulous wealth in the hands of a
few individuals, in parallel with the concentration of power and
production of knowledge by the mass media. Every state has two options,
the support of the rights of the citizens or of submission, of
transaction and covering up of the arbitrariness of power,? the PASOK
leader said, charging that ?the government has chosen the second
option.?
Papandreou further accused the New Democracy (ND) government of
?promoting corruption.? Referring to the issue of the bonds, he
accused it of ?disappearing the Zorbas report, resulting in it being an
object of possible blackmail. In such cases, judicial functionaries are
also co-responsible, if not as equally guilty of a cover-up as well.?
[02] Archbishop's health worsens, doctors say
Eight doctors treating ailing Archbishop of Athens and All Greece
Christodoulos in a joint communiqu? on Monday afternoon said that his
health is worsening.
The communiqu? added that ?itâs possible for the archbishopâs treatment
to be conducted at his home with the suitable medical care.
Furthermore, this is the approach agreed in accordance to his wishes
which he has repeatedly expressed.?
