  • [01] PM Costas Karamanlis holds talks with U.S. Ambassador Daniel Speckhard

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis held a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Athens Daniel Speckhard at the Maximos Mansion office in Athens on Friday morning. The talks lasted for one hour and 20 minutes. No statements were made after the meeting. On Thursday, Karamanlis was briefed by Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. After the meeting, Bakoyiannis referred to the prime minister's formal visit to Turkey stressing that it is scheduled and the date will be announced.

    On Wednesday, the prime minister reiterated that he is determined to proceed with necessary reforms for the country, speaking during a reception by the Athens Chamber of Industry and Commerce. "During a difficult and fluid international juncture, the Greek economy is on the right course, indicating that it has a strong growth rate allowing us to confront any challenges."

    [02] Ragoussis to address political event

    Main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) spokesman Yiannis Ragoussis will address a political event-dinner at the Trikala Prefecural Committee at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. At noon at Trikala, northern Greece, Ragoussis will give a press conference at the offices of the Trikala Prefecural Committee.

    The latest developments in the investigation involving former culture ministry secretary general Christos Zachopoulos, the legalisation of illegally built houses, the rise in the price of oil, the letter by the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE) on the collective labour agreement and predictions on the course of the Athens Stock Exchange dominated the headlines in Athens' dailies on Friday.
