  • [01] Search for missing Apache crew

An immense search and rescue operation was underway on Thursday to locate the two crew members of an army Apache gunship helicopter that disappeared from radar screens on Wednesday night while flying with another Apache near the town of Kymi in eastern Greece on a training mission.

According to the Defence Ministry, explosions were heard in the area and a fire broke out. Police and firefighting forces immediately rushed to the area and two Super Puma helicopters and a C-130 aircraft also lifted off, while ground forces were been deployed in the region.

The National Defence General Staff announced later on that wreckage of the helicopter was spotted in the environs of Sotiros Monastery in Kymi. Police forces sealed off the area and firemen were battling a fire that broke out. The helicopter on board the frigate Hydra was also placed on the alert at 20:38.

The Apache disappeared from radar screens at 20:11.
