[01] Protest at TIF site
Plans for a protest against the annual Thessaloniki International Fair
(TIF), which opens on Saturday, in the form of a "human chain"
surrounding the downtown facilities as well as the adjacent III Army
Corps grounds, were unveiled on Friday by the independent leftist
municipal council faction "Initiative for Thessaloniki".
The head of the local government faction, councilman Yiannis Boutaris,
charged that the site occupied by the exhibition organisers HELEXPO and
the adjacent army base should be converted into a park.
"The trade fair has veered from its goal and become a political
fest-bazaar," Boutaris said, adding that he would seek meetings with
the heads of the political parties in order to discuss local government
issues.
