[01] Fire near Epidavros theatre
A wildfire that broke out on Thursday near Adami village, Argolis
prefecture, southeastern Greece is in progress. The blaze started
southeast of the ancient theatre of Epidavros and is burning
forestland.
A major force of firefighters assisted by water dropping aircrafts
are trying to put the fire under control. Inhabited areas and
archaeological sites are not endangered.
Earlier, a fire burst out at Lithovounia, central Peloponnese. Major
Fire Brigade forces are operating in the area to extinguish the
blaze that is burning brushland.
[02] Holidaymakers mass exodus
The annual Dormition of the Theotokos (Assumption of the Virgin)
religious holiday in the predominately Orthodox Christian nation, one
of the most significant on the ecclesiastical calendar and the
unofficial culmination of the summer vacation season in Greece, will be
celebrated on August 15 marking the height of summer with a mass exodus
of holidaymakers. In keeping with tradition, most of the country's top
political leadership will attend church services at a handful of
revered cathedrals dedicated to the Theotokos, most notably on the
Cyclades island of Tinos and at the Panaghia Soumela Monastery in
central Macedonia (Imathia prefecture).
