  • [01] PASOK comments on Karadzic arrest

Main opposition PASOK party on Tuesday termed the arrest of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic in Serbia, "an important step" in the country's course towards the European Union.

"The arrest of Karadzic constitutes an important step in Serbia's course towards the European Union and is a message of the will of Serbia's new government to advance in its European course," party spokesman George Papaconstantinou told reporters.

The spokesman also referred to what he called "contribution" of the Socialist International (SI) and its president, PASOK leader George Papandreou, "to the formation of this new government of Serbia and for this country to turn a page."

    FYROM issue

The PASOK spokesman also questioned on Tuesday the expediency of a reply letter by Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis to his Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) counterpart, claiming that "it puts all issues on the table".

"It was not that Mr. Karamanlis's arguments were wrong. It was that the expediency of replying to the Skopjan prime minister was wrong in itself. And this, because it puts all issues on the table," Papaconstantinou said while commenting on the Karamanlis reply letter in which he rejected claims of a "Macedonian" minority in Greece, advanced by the FYROM prime minister.

"PASOK not only insists on its view that the prime minister should have not replied to FYROM premier Nikola Gruevski, but it is vindicated everyday it passes," Papaconstantinou added, reiterating that "Greece has no other issue to discuss with Skopje than that of the name issue" of the landlocked republic.
