[01] Chasing wasps leads to wildfire
A Hellenic Air Force tribunal in Athens will try the 27-year-old man
arrested for inadvertantly starting a wildfire in Dervenohoria, Viotia
prefecture on Tuesday, the air force general staff announced on
Thursday.
The man, a petty officer stationed at a fuel depot, was arrested by the
fire brigade after he admitted to accidentally starting the fire in an
attempt to, of all things, smoke out wasps that had made a nest on the
fuel pipe. He stands accused of arson through negligence.
The man said that he set fire to some paper in order to drive the wasps
away and accidentally started the fire. He then called the 199
emergency number and assisted in fire-fighting efforts.
The fire quickly spread out of control and threatened to set fire to
homes in the village of Panakton, as well as facilities belonging to
the munitions manufacturer Pyrkal.
