The president of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Triet, began a historic official visit to Greece on Monday, where he was received by his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias at the presidential mansion in Athens.

Talks afterwards by the two head of states focused on political developments in SE Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean. A cultural agreement was signed afterwards.

"Vietnam today is one of the most dynamically developing countries of SE Asia, while with its struggles it has made other peoples who fought for their freedom feel close to them (the Vietnamese people)," Papoulias said.

On his part, Vietnam's president emphasised that political relations between the two countries are excellent, whereas economic and trade ties must catch up with political cooperation.

Nguyen also thanked the Greek people for supporting Vietnam's independence movement and recent Greek government support for Hanoi's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) as well as a non-permanent member on the UN Security Council.

Finally, he noted that several other Greece-Vietnam cooperation agreements are being processed ahead of Papoulias' visit to Vietnam next October.

Later, the Vietnamese head of state met with Parliament President Dimitris Sioufas, while afternoon meetings with Greece's political leaders are scheduled.

Greece opened an embassy in Hanoi in 2007.
