[01] Chicago's Olympics bid in Athens
The visiting mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, met with US diplomats
in Athens on Monday, including US envoy Daniel Speckhard, as the
veteran Illinois politician heads a municipal delegation that arrived
in Greece to promote the "Windy City's" bid for the 2016 Olympic
Games.
"I'm very excited about the prospect of Chicago hosting these Games ...
It's a fantastic city and close to my heart, since I grew up in the
American Midwest; and Chicago is a great city to carry on the ancient
Olympic tradition, started here in Greece, of bringing athletes
together in the spirit of peace and friendship," Speckhard said.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the US embassy on Tuesday will
host a large US delegation in Greece for this year's Posidonia maritime
trade show, which begins in the Greek capital this week. The delegation
will include some 30 delegates from Louisiana, representing the city of
New Orleans, the Port of South Louisiana, the port of New Orleans and
the state of Louisiana.
