  • [01] PASOK: Programmatic opposition with creative proposals

Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou said that his party will exercise "programmatic opposition with creative proposals, that will prove that we are not all the same, and that there are no one-way streets", given that "we remain the main force of reform in the country", in an interview appearing in the Sunday edition of Eleftheros Typos newspaper.

He also set PASOK's victory in the next general elections as the deadline for the completion of his work, adding that "other arbitrary dates or interpretations contribute little to this general target".

Papandreou endorsed a change of the political system in Greece, opining that "when others publicly, and with abhorrence, reject cooperation governments, they themselves become culpable for the 'two-party system' they reproach".

On the internal processes in the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), the PASOK leader expressed the ope that "the outcome will contribute in the direction of advancing dialogue and joint action among all the forces of the Centre-Left".

He reiterated his proposal for setting up a forum with the "other Left", in order to "discuss our differences, and at the same time contribute to change of the Greek society".

"I have taken the step. But, you see, it takes two to tango," Papandreou added.

On the composition of the party bodies, Papandreou said that "it would be a great mistake to consider that PASOK is a federation of party fiefs".

"Our unity is not expressed by alliances of interests but by common values," he said, adding that there was no institutional role of 'rapporteur of the leader', but rather, there were cadres who undertook a variety of 'battle responsibilities', and were judged each time by how they meet their duties.

Papandreou further pledged that "plurality and dialogue will never be absent from our democratic movement", and mad it clear that "very soon the citizens will be convinced that the sins of the past no longer burden PASOK".
