  • [01] Wildfire threatens ancient Olympia

A fast-moving wildfire has reportedly surrounded the archaeological site at ancient Olympia, in the northwest Peloponnese, on Sunday afternoon at roughly 6 p.m. local time (16.00 GMT), with the pine-covered hilltop above the renowned stadion, the ancient track, burned.

Concentrated efforts were underway by ground forces and fire-fighting aircraft - at least two French planes, a Russian helicopter and a fire brigade chopper - to prevent the wildfire from reaching the actual antiquities, the museum and the other facilities.

Culture Minister George Voulgarakis was on route to the site via helicopter, reports stated.

[02] Rewards offered for arrest of arsonists

The government on Sunday announced rewards ranging from 100,000 euros to one million euros for information on arsonists involved in this week's barrage of wildfire ravaging much of southern Greece.

The offer concerns evidence and information leading to the arrest of individual culprits or members of a criminal ring deliberately setting fires outdoors.

The decision concerns the period between July 1, 2007, until the day of the decision's pubication, as well as those acts carried out until Dec. 31, 2007.
