  • [01] Yiannakou pushes univ. reform package

Education Minister Marietta Yiannakou on Thursday met with a group of university professors who have distanced themselves from the position expressed by some of their colleagues and by the leadership of the university professors' union, namely, withdrawal of a higher education reform package.

The minister described the three-hour meeting as excellent, adding that her interlocutors presented specific proposals. She also stated that the ministry of education is not "fixed" on its proposal, stressing that suggestions presented in the meeting converged and were of great value.

The education ministry will go over every proposal, she said, adding that each of them reflected the university professors' concerns over the future of the higher education institutions.

Yiannakou also said the education ministry is open to university professors who have so far refused to participate in a wide-ranging dialogue.

The government has promised to table a draft bill containing a package of higher education reforms during the ongoing legislative session, proposed reforms that have generated heated opposition by leftist parties, affiliated college student groups and the professors' union.
