  • [01] Papandreou visits election centres of party candidates in Larissa

Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou criticised the government and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in an address he made at the election centres of party candidates in the prefecture of Larissa, central Greece, on Friday, ahead of municipal and prefectural elections due to take place in the country on October 15.

Referring to the prime minister, Papandreou said "it appears that he is bound by economic interests and a status quo of arbitrariness and not a society of values", also criticising the government of "deliberately creating insecurity among the Greek people and of wanting the citizen a hostage so that it can buy off the popular vote."

Papandreou also said that the government is showing at the same time great sensitivity for "its own people, its friends, the chosen ones and the powerful", while claiming that the policy of the government wants to help a small group of people.

[02] Police find stolen icon of Virgin Mary

A priceless icon depicting the Virgin Mary that had been stolen 37 days ago from the Elona Monastery in the city of Leonidio, in the Peloponnese, was found by police on Saturday morning. A 28-year-old Romanian arrested on Thursday in the village of Falakro, also in the Peloponnese, admitted the theft and told police where he had hidden it.

The icon had been placed in a box that he had wrapped in clothes and placed in an opening in a wall outside the Pantanasa Church in the same village.

Greek Police chief Anastasios Dimoschakis arrived at the Arcadia Police Department at noon on Saturday and gave a press conference.

"I am very proud to be in the pleasant position to announce that the Greek Police has solved the case of the theft of the icon of the Virgin Mary. Particularly for us, for the Greek Police, the finding of the icon and the arrest of the perpetrators was a wager of honour," the police chief said.

The thief, who apparently acted alone, is considered to be tough and dangerous. He has been living in Greece for seven years and his possible involvement in other offences in Greece and Romania will be examined.

The desire of the police chief is for a small church to be built at the location where the icon was found, and a replica to be placed inside, at the expense of the police.
