[01] FM briefs President on UNSC agenda
Foregin minister Dora Bakoyannis on Tuesday briefed President of the
Republic Karolos Papoulias on the issues on the UN Security Council
agenda for the month of September, during Greece's term in the UNSC
rotating presidency for the month of September.
Bakoyannis was due to meet later in the day with visiting British
Minister for Europe Geoffrey Hoon for talks covering EU enlargement --
including Turkey's European course -- the Cyprus problem, and issues of
international concern that are at the focus of this month's United
Nations Security Council discussions, since Greece holds the monthly
rotating presidency of the Council.
The meeting will be followed by statements to the press.
In the afternoon, Bakoyannis will brief parliament's Standing Committee
on National Defence and Foreign Affairs on the developments in the
Middle East and the agenda of Greece's UNSC presidency.
Earlier, Bakoyannis received US ambassador in Athens Charlies Ries. The
meeting was held in light of Bakoyannis' upcoming visit to the US,
where she is due on Friday, and the current sessions of the UN Security
Council. The Greek foreign minister is due to arrive in New York on
September 15, and will address the UN General Assembly on September 22.
Afterwards, she will visit Washington on September 26-27, where she
will have meetings with US National Security advisor Stephen Hadley and
energy secretary Samuel Bodman.
Hoon is also scheduled to meet Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for
European Affairs, Yannis Valinakis. The talks will focus on EU matters,
such as the Union's budget, the discussion on the Future of Europe, the
Common Agriculture Policy and the free movement of workers.
