  • [01] Huge fire at solvent plant in Lavrio extinguished

A major fire that broke out Wednesday at the Hyma SA solvents and chemicals factory in Lavrio, Athens, near the Public Power Corporation (PPC) power plant, was extinguished early Thursday, but firefighters remained in the area to prevent a renewed outbreak of the blaze. Meanwhile, another fire, in Kato Souli, Marathonas in the wider Athens region, has been placed under control.

The fire in Lavrio broke out on Wednesday morning and quickly spread to five tanks containing solvents. Industrial plants in the surrounding area were evacuated for fear of an explosion.

The entire firefighting force of the wider Athens area was placed on a high state of alert due to the gravity of the situation.

Firefighting efforts were hampered by the extremely high temperatures developed as a result of the raging fire, which prevented land forces from approaching. Three helicopters and two aircraft participated in the firefighting efforts using flame retardant foam.

A total of 120 firefighters, 40 fire-engines, and 12 water tankers, dispatched to the region by local municipalities, battled the blaze throughout the night.
