  • [01] Traffic police boost measures for Easter return

Traffic police have stepped up measures to ease the return of holidaymakers who spent Orthodox Easter in the countryside, especially after a high death toll in the country's annual exodus from the cities.

According to police statistics, 40 people lost their lives in road accidents until Monday morning, even before completion of the return to the cities, while in 2005, the death toll was 41 for the entire period. Many accidents occured in urban areas, mainly due to speeding in empty roads.

Among measures authorities have taken to improve safety and ease congestion are extra lanes on the city-entry side of motorways where traffic jams are expected. In addition, trucks have been barred from using major highways during the peak return period.

This year's exodus was the highest in recent years with 325,984, or 31.85% more vehicles leaving Athens and Thessaloniki than in 2005.

A total of 1,349,334 vehicles left the two cities against 1,023,350 a year earlier, traffic police said.
