  • [01] Easter exodus begins, aided by good weather

Traffic police throughout the country were on standby along national highways on Thursday to assist motorists as the Easter exodus from Greek cities to the countryside began.

According to the weather service, however, travellers will find an ally in the weather that is forecast to stay fine during peak travelling times.

Measures were taken at all the main junctions of the Athens-Corinth and Athens-Lamia highways exiting Athens based on the amount of traffic, while emergency measures have been programmed for the return of holiday-makers at the usual problem points during mass re-entries.

In the meantime, police have banned trucks over 1.5 tonnes from using the national highways between 15:00 to 22:00 on Thursday and 8:00 until 13:00 on Friday.

All forms of public transport are approaching 100 percent of passenger capacity over the next few days, with additional routes scheduled to serve the additional passengers on planes, boats and trains.

Meanwhile, authorities announced that market inspections were continuing in order to protect the health of the public and clamp down on profiteering.
