  • [01] PASOK opposed to amendment for bank workers

Main opposition PASOK Spokesman Nikos Athanassakis said on Monday that PASOK is 'absolutely opposed' to the amendment that the government tabled in Parliament on Friday regarding the bank employees' pension scheme.

Athanassakis said that the amendment, which will be voted on Tuesday, "strikes a blow to bank employees and insurance funds, while benefitting bankers and banks".

He said that PASOK would vote against the amendement.

On his part, PASOK employment, social policy and health sector chief Evangelos Venizelos claimed on Monday that the amendment regarding the bank employees social insurance issue, tabled in Parliament last Friday, "is a monument of political authoritarianism and of legal nonsense".

Venizelos said that the amendment "directly contravenes the principle of the separation of powers because it interferes with pending trials, violates the principle of collective autonomy, because it abolishes the terms contained in collective agreements, harms the property of existing funds, violates the additional protocol of the European Human Rights Pact and, of course, it contravenes the principles of equality, as well as of economic freedom, not only because it harms the insurance rights of a group of working people and creates unjustified inequalities among them but also because it unjustifiably favours specific banking businesses, both as employers in relation to employees and as competitors in relation to other similar businesses."

He also predicted that what is currently taking place with the bank employees' insurance funds will also be taking place with public utilities.
