[01] Gov't on Eurozone entry, early elections
Government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos on Monday dismissed
speculation about early elections, triggered by a statement made by
Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis, underlining that the general
elections would be held at the end of the government's four-year term.
He also commented the statements made by Alogoskoufis about Greece's
entry into the Eurozone, stressing that the present government "served
the goal of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) entry faithfully".
At the same time, he underlined that "it was clear" that the true
fiscal situation at the time Greece joined EMU was different from that
which PASOK tried to present.
"Due to the hidden deficits of PASOK governments we are today obliged
to make great efforts. We must not forget that the audit carried out by
Community services showed a series of errors, shortfalls and
concealment that were the result of PASOK's policy," the spokesman
noted.
He also stressed that if New Democracy had been a government at the
time, "we would have on no account created false impressions about the
economy and we would have clearly brought the country into EMU."
