  • [01] Papoulias briefed on economy by Alogoskoufis

President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias on Thursday was briefed by Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis regarding the current state of the economy, especially regarding the recent approval of the country's stability and growth programme by the European Commission.

In continuing his upbeat forecast for the Greek economy on the heels of several positive developments of late, namely, growth rates, employment and the effort to slash the budget deficit, Alogoskoufis emphasised that Greece avoided a post-Olympics recession in 2005.

Additionally, he reiterated to Papoulias the fact that GDP growth for 2005 reached 3.7 percent, with unemployment falling under 10 percent and with the budget deficit goal for 2006 still set at below 3 percent of GDP.

Moreover, he repeated earlier statements of pension increases and tax cuts for 2007.

    [02] Bakoyannis-Rice meeting this month

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis will travel to the United States on March 22 for a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice the following day in Washington.

Arrangements for the visit were finalised on Wednesday but the agenda for the talks between the two women has not yet been determined, foreign ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos said.

The spokesman did not rule out the possibility of a subsequent trip by Bakoyannis to New York for talks with members of the ethnic Greek community in the metropolis.

Asked about the possibility of further contacts by the foreign minister, such as at the Pentagon or at the United Nations, Koumoutsakos replied that details of the visit had not yet been fully worked out.
