  • [01] Cyprus President Papadopoulos confers with Pres. Papoulias, to meet with PM, party leaders

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, in Greece on a working visit, met Wednesday with his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias.

The two heads of state discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, following Papadopoulos' recent meeting with UN secretary general Kofi Annan, and the prospects for resumption of the process for a resolution of the political problem.

Papadopoulos was currently in a meeting with prime minister Costas Karamanlis, which would be followed by a working lunch.

The Cyprus President was due to meet separately with the leaders of the Greek opposition parties later in the day.

President of the Republic Papoulias hosted an informal dinner for Papadopoulos and the Cypriot delegation on Tuesday night, which was also attended by Greece's new foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis.

[02] Greek consular office in FYROM inaugurated

SKOPJE (ANA-MPA/N. Melissova) - Visiting Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stylianidis on Tuesday inaugurated Greece's consular office of Economic and Commercial Affairs in the city of Bitola, FYROM. The event was held in the presence of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) Deputy Foreign Minister Cemali Hasanovic, consul Dimitris Papandreou and local officials.

"Overcoming the difficulties of past years, we are coming here to build a new bridge, a bridge between countries, markets and people," Stylianidis said.

"The consular office aspires to facilitate this effort and to strengthen the steadfast strategic position of Greece, to support the European prospects of the western Balkans and of this country," he further said, adding that "borders that are crossed by trade are not crossed by armies."

Stylianidis also said that Greek investments amounting to 850 million euros have been carried out in FYROM, which have created 20,000 jobs, while it is characteristic that border crossings between the two countries exceed 45,000 a month.

The new consular office, which has already been operating for three months, has issued 5,500 visas over this period, according to data provided by the Greek Liaison Office Head, Ambassador Dora Grosomanidou, also present at the inauguration ceremony .
