  • [01] PM, telecom officials to meet

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is scheduled to meet with the heads of Greece's independent telecoms authorities - the Authority for Protecting Privacy of Communications (ADAE) and the National Commission for Telecommunications and Post Offices (EETT) - on Monday morning. Apart from ADAE president Andreas Lambrinopoulos and EETT president Nikitas Alexandridis, the meeting will also be attended by Justice Minister Anastasios Papaligouras and Transport and Communications Minister Mihalis Liapis.

    In addition, the prime minister has also arranged to meet with six legal experts on Monday in order to discuss ways to strengthen the legal framework for protecting telecommunications, as the premier intends to set up a committee to assess their proposals.

    [02] Karamanlis-Merkel meeting on Wednesday

    BERLIN (ANA - P. Stangos) The office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel has officially announced a meeting between Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Wednesday. The announcement said they will discuss issues concerning bilateral relations, and matters of international and European politics.

    According to the announcement, Karamanlis and Merkel will hold a joint press conference after 15 minutes of private talks, after which there will be a meeting between Greek and German delegations.

    Papandreou speaks with Annan, Lebanese PM over 'cartoon issue'

    Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou, in telephone conversations over the weekend with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, discussed the issue which has arisen following the publication in several European newspapers of cartoons centring on the Prophet Mohammed.

    A PASOK press release on Sunday noted that Papandreou, in his capacity as president of Socialist International, discussed by phone with Annan on issues related to Socialist International, the issue of the cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, the Middle East issue and the Cyprus issue.

    Papandreou also communicated with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Fouad Siniora and discussed the Middle East issue and that of the cartoons of Mohammed.

    [04] Statue of 19th C. statesman Trikoupis unveiled

    The statue of leading 19th century Greek statesman Harilaos Trikoupis was unveiled in Messolonghi, western Greece, on Sunday, in the presence of Parliament President Anna Benaki-Psarouda. Speaking during the ceremony, the Parliament president said the Messolonghi native "consolidated parliamentarianism in Greece."

    The ceremony was also attended by deputies and local officials.
