[01] Officials call for lifting of restrictions after negative tests
for bird flu
Deputy Agriculture Development Minister Alexandros Kontos has conveyed
a letter the Greek foreign ministry requesting that Athensā diplomatic
services emphasise to the governments of Albania, the Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Bulgaria that no instances of bird
flu have been detected in the country, days after a single and
much-publicised suspected case tested negative for the H5N1 virus.
Kontos also called for the lifting of any restrictions on Greek poultry
exports to the neighbouring countries, most in place since last week.
In a related development, agriculture ministry officials informed
Albanian ambassador to Athens Bashkim Zeneli on Friday that tests on
poultry in the country turned up negative for bird flu, while again
stressing that this fact certainly "does not justify the unilateral
measures" taken by Tirana against Greek exports to neighbouring
Albania.
On his part, Deputy Health Minister George Constantopoulos told an
audience of delegates at a pharmaceuticals exhibition in Thessaloniki
that he was confident a vaccine against the specific virus will be
found within the next six months.
