  • [01] PASOK information booth vandalised in Maroussi

    A ruling PASOK party information booth for non-local voters in Kastalia Square, Maroussi was vandalised during the night by unknown assailants, it was reported on Saturday.

    The culprits flung rocks through the booth's glass windows and then fled the scene without being intercepted.

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis on Saturday visited his own constituency in the working-class district of Kaminia in southwest Athens near Piraeus, on the eve of the general elections on Sunday.

    His first port of call was the district's central square, where he talked with local residents and visited a number of shops and businesses on the square and surrounding roads.

    He then called at PASOK's campaign office in Kaminia, after which he joined PASOK party parliamentary candidates in the Athens 1st and Piraeus 2nd constituencies for a glass of wine in a local taverna.

    On the eve of the general elections on Sunday, ruling PASOK leader George Papandreou and main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis on Saturday both held lunches for journalists to thank them for their work during the pre-election campaign.

    Papandreou held his dinner at Kerameikos and Karamanlis at the restaurant Aigli in Zappion.

    Both leaders said they were confident about victory in the polls.

    Visiting the west Athens district of Peristeri on Saturday, one day before Sunday's general elections, Democratic Social Movement (DHKKI) leader Dimitris Tsovolas thanked journalists for their role in informing the public but also complained that no DHKKI representatives had been invited to discussions organised by two television stations on Friday night.

Icy conditions on the mainland overnight, with temperatures falling below freezing. Winds easterly and southeasterly, moderate to strong, rising to gale force over the Ionian Sea. Temperatures in Athens 1C to 13C and in Thessaloniki from 1C to 9C.
