  • [01] Athens bourse tightens rules on mergers, acquisitions

    The Athens bourse on Thursday announced measures to tighten up rules on mergers and acquisitions.

    Among the changes are that valuations in mergers or buyouts must be conducted by more than one auditing house, authorities said in a statement.

    In addition, companies will be obliged to issue a merger or acquisition prospectus before shareholders' meetings to approve the moves; and a tax check will be conducted in companies that join forces.

    [02] Excavations in Dion reveal Roman building covering 500 square metres

    Ongoing archaeological excavations in Dion, in the northern prefecture of Pieria, have located an impressive Roman building covering an area of over 500 square metres which was probably used as a wrestling ring.

    The building has 12 sides and a black and white mosaic on its entrance floor whose dimensions are 4X1.5 metres. The mosaic depicts sports performances, images from the animal and plant world and geometrical formations.

    The results of excavations at Dion will be presented on Friday, in the framework of a meeting on archaeological work in Macedonia and Thrace, by the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki's professor of archaeology Dimitris Pantermalis.

    [03] Athens International Airport presents 'Environmental Information Center'

    The Athens International Airport is presenting a new facility, the ''Environmental Information Center'', located in the main terminal building, according to a press release issued by the airport's management on Thursday.

    ''Committed to its major objective to effectively contribute to environmental protection and continuously monitor and control potential environmental impacts, Athens International Airport presents a new facility, the 'Environmental Information Center', located in the airport's Main Terminal Building (Arrivals Level/Entrance 3),'' the press release said.

    ''The main objective of the Environmental Information Center-an area accessible to all passengers and visitors-is to inform the public about AIA's environmental activities and increase environmental awareness. For this purpose, photographic and informative material, as well as a video presentation depicting the airport's environmental programmes and targets, are available at the Environmental Information Center,'' it added.

    [04] Byzantine exhibition opening in Amsterdam on Friday

    THE HAGUE (ANA) - The ''2001-2004 Cultural Olympiad'' will inaugurate the exhibition ''Byzantine icons from the heart of Greece'' in Amsterdam on Friday with icons from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine era.

    The exhibition, due to last until June 1, 2003, will present 32 icons dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The icons depict various issues. However, the images of Christ and the Virgin Mary dominate the exhibits.

    [06] Greek stocks end flat on Thursday

    Greek stocks eased slightly in the Athens Stock Exchange on Thursday reflecting lack of activity in the market and very low turnover.

    The general index eased 0.08 percent to end at 1,676.05 points, with turnover a low 46.4 million euros.

    The Industrial, Holding and Construction sectors scored gains (0.47 percent, 0.38 percent and 0.32 percent, respectively), while the Publication, IT Solution and Cement sectors suffered the biggest percentage losses of the day (1.66 percent, 1.57 percent and 1.37 percent, respectively).

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavy traded stocks eased 0.40 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index rose 0.06 percent and the FTSE/ASE SmallCap 80 index rose 0.08 percent.

    The wider FTSE/ASE 140 index ended 0.08 percent higher. Broadly, decliners led advancers by 159 to 118 with another 77 issues unchanged.
