[02] Freighter 'Medtrader' sinks off Skyros, one man missing (CORRECTION)

    08/12/2001 16:33:21

Corrects title "one man drowned" to correct "one man missing"

Eleven members of the crew aboard the St Vincent-flagged freighter "Medtrader" that sank 25 nautical miles east of Skyros had been rescued and were safe on board the Russian tanker "Brothers I", the merchant marine ministry announced on Saturday.

A twelfth member of the crew that is still missing, Yugoslav electrician Momcilo Kocevic, may have become trapped and gone down with the ship.

The Cypriot-owned freighter, which issued a distress signal late on Friday night, had set sail from the Romanian port of Constanta laden with two tonnes of iron and was bound for an Italian port in the Adriatic. According to first estimates, it probably sank when its load shifted in extremely rough seas.

Authorities said that one all-weather rescue helicopter andnearby coast guard vessels were continuing the search for the missing crewman but had still not found anything on Saturday afternoon. According to the rescued crew-members, Kocevic probably did not have time to get off the ship before it sank.

A planned visit by Putin to the semi-autonomous monastic community on Mount Athos and its historic Orthodox monasteries has been cancelled due to bad weather conditions in the area.
