[02] Events leading up to 7th Symi Festival21/06/2001 13:54:28Events leading up to the 7th Symi Festival are due to begin over the next few days, beginning with a concert in Thessaloniki. The Symi Festival takes in all the smaller Dodecanese islands and is heralded by four pre-Festival events that will take place on Rhodes, Athens, Thessaloniki (for the first time ever) and Elefsina. These will begin with a music concert at 9:00 p.m. on June 27 at Thessaloniki's White Tower entitled 'Travelling with music, 1650-2001: From Baroque to Jazz', performed by the Theodoros Kerkezos Saxophone Quartet. This will be followed by a concert by Deborah Meyers on Rhodes on June 29, who will sing selected arias and songs from musicals. On July 1 in Athens, there will be a concert by composer Ilias Andriopoulos and singer Maria Dimitriadi at the Museum for Folk Instruments 'Foivos Anogianakis' in Plaka, also featuring traditional music played by the 'Symi Company'. The pre-Festival events will close with a performance next to the Elefsina archaeological site on July 6, where actress Melina Boteli will sing in the park accompanied by guitarist Michalis Sourvinos. Founded in 1995, the Symi Festival is sponsored by the Symi municipality and islanders living abroad, while the artists and organisers participate on a voluntary basis. The Festival's programme includes concerts of classical, traditional and modern music, theatre, films, poetry, dance and art exhibition, and the participating islands are Karpathos, Kasos, Kastellorizo, Nisyros, Symi and Hali. Since 1998 the festival has been international through its participation in the European Union's 'Kaleidoscope' programme, which this year includes events organised in Rome and Berlin.
