    Stephen Saunders, the British defence attache in Greece, died in Thursday morning after being shot by unknown gunmen on a motorcycle as he drove from his suburban home to his office at the British embassy in downtown Athens, hospital doctors told ANA.

    Britain's defence attache in Athens was shot and seriously injured by an unknown gunman riding atop a motorcycle in an Athens suburban highway, police said.

    The diplomat was identified as Brig. Stephen Saunders, 50, who was listed in critical condition at an Athens hospital. The attack occurred a few minutes before 8 a.m. local time. Saunders had earlier left his house in the northern Athens suburb of Nea Erithrea and was heading to the British embassy in downtown Athens.

    Police said the two men on the motorcycle, both wearing white crash helmets, approached the officer's car, a Rover, and shot him. According to eyewitnesses, Sanders, who was driving alone, was shot with either a shotgun or a 45 calibre pistol.

    He was rushed to the Erythros Stavros (Red Cross) Hospital were he was undergoing surgery for chest injuries at press time. Hospital doctors described his condition as "critical".

    A British embassy source said Saunders, the father of two daughters, had been serving in Athens for the past two to three years.

    The diplomat was identified as Steven Sanders, the embassy's military attache. The attack occurred a few minutes before 0800 local time. The diplomat had earlier left his house in the northern Athens suburb of Nea Erithrea and was heading for the British embassy in the downtown residential district of Kolonaki.

    Police said the two men on the motorcycle, wearing white crash helmets, approached the diplomat's car, a Rover and shot him. According to eyewitnesses, the diplomat, who was driving and was alone in the car shot him with a shotgun or a 45 calibre pistoi.

    Sanders was rushed to Erithros Stavros (Red Cross) hospital were he was still undergoing surgery for chess injuries. Hospital doctors described his condition as "critical".

    Police found several documents in and round the car and were investigating to see is there was a terrorist organisation leaflet among them.
