  • And American leaders watch Antenna Satellite's coverage of brutal Turkish murders in Cyprus.

SIMITIS

New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert went on the election offensive this week. In his first major campaign address, he told the nation that he will cut taxes to help save farmers and small businessmen from extinction.

Prime minister Kostas Simitis followed with a rebuttal, claiming Evert's plan amounts to an unworkable handout.

Mr Simitis added that Pasok already has the economy on the right road.

EVERT

Miltiades Evert responded promptly to the prime minister's challenge to explain where he intends to find the money to finance his economic reforms.

In a press conference on Thursday, the opposition leader detailed what his tax relief would cost, claiming the final price tag is only half what Mr Simitis says it would be.

Evert said cutting out government waste would easily raise the money needed to help the struggling self-employed middle classes.

SAMARAS

Political Spring's president jumped into the election fray Friday, announcing his election platform at a press conference.

Antonis Samaras said Pasok and New Democracy are parties steeped in the past.

He told the nation that his party would break with the past and give Greeks staggering under the burden of economic austerity, hope of a better future.

US GREEK

America's predominant position in the world means who's in the White House is of special interest to Greece.

Leading American Democratic Party supporters ensured Antenna this week that president Clinton will continue to take a personal interest in Greece if re-elected.

CHICAGO VLAVIANOS

On the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week, Greek-Americans held a banquet.

The event, attended by leading Greek-Americans and US government officials, provided a forum for discussion of the Cyprus issue.
