SIMITISPrime minister Kostas Simitis consolidated his political position last Sunday. Elected president of Pasok at the party's fourth congress, Mr Simitis's control over the party as well as over the government is now undisputed.Mr Simitis beat Akis Tsochatzopoulos in Sunday's contest, the same man he beat in the prime ministerial election in parliament in January. NDDespite the outcome of the Pasok congress, New Democracy believes that Pasok remains sorely divided, and that the government's inability to handle the country's problems will force it to call national elections this autumn, rather than at the end of its four-year term next autumn.New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert chaired a meeting of his party's election campaign committee Tuesday. They discussed ways the party should prepare for early elections. MP Tzanis Tzannetakis presented a timetable at the meeting, according to which New Democracy will be ready for elections by the end of August. New Democracy MP Angelos Bratakos, one of 40 people present at the meeting said, "We don't care whether Kostas Simitis or Akis Tsochatzopoulos was elected Pasok's president. What is important is that Pasok, in its present state, can't govern our country". MP Sotiris Kouvelas, said "Our opponent is Pasok, a deeply divided and incompetent party". Others talked about ways New Democracy can improve. MP Sotiris Hatzigakis said his party doesn't need to fear Pasok. All it has to do is make sure it has the policies and the image it needs to win the next elections. IAKOVOSThis week, Greeks in America said an emotional goodbye to Orthodox archbishop of the Americas Iakovos, their spiritual leader for 37 years.Over two thousand Greeks living in the United States, American and Greek political and clerical leaders, and representatives from the seat of the Greek orthodox church in Constantinople attended the banquet honouring Iakovos, who served as archbishop for nearly four decades, and was an active advocate of Orthodoxy and Hellenism on key issues. "I say farewell to you tonight with the farewell of Jesus", a deeply moved Iakovos told those attending the dinner. US senator and Greek-American Paul Sarbanis gave archbishop Iakovos president Bill Clinton's personal farewell message. Former US presidents George Bush and Jimmy Carter also sent messages. The love Greeks living in the States feel for Iakovos was evident. One woman said, "Being separated from our father affects us emotionally". Another woman added, "We will always have him in our hearts". And one man said, "The archbishop isn't leaving. He belongs to the intelligentia of our era". GREECE / TURKEYTurkey followed Greece's lead this week, in accepting a US-Nato sponsored initiative to improve relations between Greece and Turkey.The initiative is built around the promotion of confidence building measures designed to ease tensions in the Aegean. IMIATension between Greece and Turkey took a dramatic upswing at the end of January, when Turkey sparked the crisis over the Greek rocks of Imia.Three Greek naval officers who died carrying out a helicopter mission during that episode, were posthumously honoured this week. New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert unveiled a monument erected in their honour in an Athens suburb. PAGEANTAphrodite '96 was named this week. The annual Antenna-run beauty pageant was held at Riba's music hall in seaside Varkiza just outside Athens this year.Twelve beautiful women made it to the final round. All of them were either married or divorced, proving that glamour and careers don't stop with marriage and kids. A nine-member jury judged the contestants' personalities and appearances. The finalists competed in evening gowns. Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for: Anthi Priovolou was named Aphrodite 1996. That gives her the right to represent Greece in the Miss World pageant. There was more than just pageantry. A number of popular Greek singers added a musical touch to the evening. HEATWAVEThis week, Greece was wrapped in a heatwave. But many Athenians beat the heat, and found something different to do on Monday night.Responding to an invitation from the culture ministry to visit the Acropolis for free under the light of the full moon, they ascended the rock to take in the ancient sites. People who missed out Monday don't need to pout about it. The Acropolis will also be open on the two other full moon nights this summer, July 30th and August 28th.
