CLINTON / GREEKS

GAVDOS

Greece and its Nato partners rebuffed a Turkish attempt to question Greek territory in the Aegean. At a Nato meeting in Naples on Monday, a Turkish officer asked that upcoming alliance exercises in the Aegean steer clear of the island of Gavdos, near Crete, the 300 residents of which are Greek.

After the episode, prime minister Kostas Simitis called on Turkey's leaders to start respecting international law, and stop letting the country's military dictate an aggressive foreign policy.

GAVDOS / PEOPLE / SIMITIS

People living on the island of Gavdos are up in arms.

Manolis Bikoyiannakis, a priest, said "Gavdos was, is and will remain Greek. We will defend this particular piece of our homeland with all means".

The islanders' patriotism and national pride are running high and they want Turkey to know they'll spare no effort in resisting Turkish audacity.

One boy said "They won't take Gavdos. They would have to take Crete first, and then try to take Gavdos".

Residents held a symbolic raising of the Greek flag over their island, letting their love of homeland be seen by all.

SIMITIS

Prime minister Kostas Simitis went to Thessaloniki Thursday to promote his plans to make the northern Greek city the focal point of Balkan development.

During his stay in Thessaloniki, Mr Simitis and his ministers looked at plans for major public works projects in the area, and discussed them with local officials.
