  • [01] Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrations on Tinos

    The Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebration was held on the island of Tinos on Wednesday in the presence of thousands of people and a government delegation headed by Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, who stressed that "national unity constitutes a paramount value" and termed the day a "great one for Orthodoxy and Hellenism".Events on Tinos, apart from a religious character, aso have a national significance since the memory of those lost during the torpedoing of the warship "Elli" by an Italian submarine in the island's port on the Dormition of the Virgin Mary day in 1940 is also honoured.

    [02] PM Samaras celebrates feast of Dormition in Pylos

    Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Wednesday celebrated the feast of the Dormition of Virgin Mary at his hometown of Pylos in the southwest Peloponnese, southern Greece.

    The prime minister accompanied by his wife attended mass at the church of Panaghia Myrtidiotissa.

    Afterwards, he visited the town's central square where he spoke with local people and visitors.

    [03] President Papoulias sends message of hope on feast of Dormition

    Republic President Karolos Papoulias on Wednesday sent a message of hope that the crisis will be overcome upon his arrival at the Cathedral of the Dormition of Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in the Monastery of Theotokiou in the northwest city of Arta.

    "This is a big day for Orthodox Christians. It is a day of faith and hope that united we will overcome the crisis and better days will come for the Greek people," the president stressed.

    [04] Ecumenical Patriarch officiated at Soumela monastery in Trabzon

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accompanied by Metropolitan Bishop Anthimos of Alexandroupolis and Church of Georgia Metropolitan Bishop Petros, on Wednesday officiated at the Dormition of Virgin religious service at the historic Panaghia Soumela Monastery in Trabzon province, on Turkey's Black Sea coast.

    The occasion marks the third consecutive year that the Patriarch has officiated at a service on Aug. 15 at the specific monastery, the third such event since the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey.

    Referring to the crisis in Greece, the Ecumenical Patriarch expressed the wish that "God will help Greece overcome the difficulties."

    In June 2010, the Turkish government accepted the Patriarchate's request to hold mass in the monastery, which was converted into a museum and has not operated as a Christian place of worship since 1923.

    [05] Panaghia Soumela celebrations; Patriarch of Alexandria

    Thousands of faithful on Wednesday attended the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrations at Panaghia Soumela Monastery on Mt. Vermio, northern Greece, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of the monastery's foundation-laying ceremony.

    The government was represented by Macedonia-Thrace Minister Theodoros Karaoglou. Representatives of all political parties were also present.

    Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, the guest of honour in the celebrations at Panaghia Soumela Monastery, received the Grand Cross of the Komnenoi from the Panaghia Soumela Association.

    The Patriarch referred to the difficult times Greece is going through and underlined that they can be overcome with prudence, brotherhood and unity.

    Olympic medallist Ilias Iliadis and his coach were also honoured with a special distinction.

    [06] Archbishop Ieronymos calls for unity in his sermon for the feast of Dormition

    Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece on Wednesday underlined the need for unity in his message on the occasion of the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the third most important religious holiday in the country after Christmas and Easter celebrated on August 15.

    In a sermon addressed at the Panagia pilgrimage site, located in the mountainous region of Agiasso on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos, the Archbishop underlined that the people must be united to face their problems. "We should not expect from foreigners to find solutions for us, they have always put their own interests first," the Archbishop stressed.

    The government was represented in the celebrations by Alternate Interior Minister Haralambos Athanassiou.

    [07] FM Avramopoulos sends condolences to Iranian counterpart

    Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos on Wednesday sent his condolences to his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi for the victims of the earthquakes that struck northwestern Iran and the Greek people's solidarity to the Iranian people.

    Avramopoulos also said that the Greek government is ready to offer any possible assistance.

    [08] Two foreign nationals were found dead in downtown Athens

    Two men, both foreign nationals, were found dead in downtown Athens on Wednesday.

    According to police, one body was found in a ground floor apartment on Admitos street in the district of Sepolia and the other in a dumpster across the street.

    A police investigation is underway.

    [09] Police solved foreign national's murder in Thessaloniki

    Police in Thessaloniki arrested a 24-year-old Tunisian in connection to the murder of a 25-year-old, also from Tunisia, who was found with his throat slit in the early morning hours of Tuesday outside an apartment building in the district of Ampelokipi, police announced on Tuesday evening. The victim was found dead by a delivery man.

    Another Tunisian, 20, is still wanted.

    According to police, one of the two suspects stabbed the victim for personal reasons after consuming alcohol.

    [10] Four arrests for contraband cigarette trafficking

    Four local men, aged 50, 53, 68 and 77, were arrested in Thessaloniki for possession of large quantities of contraband cigarettes, police announced on Wednesday.

    All four will be led before a prosecutor facing cigarette smuggling charges.

    A search conducted on Tuesday in a warehouse and an apartment in the districts of Evosmos and Stavroupolis revealed 123,600 and 385,750 packs of cigarettes respectively, while smaller quantities were found in the suspects' houses. In total, police found and seized 509,430 packs of contraband cigarettes.

    [11] Wildfire on Skyros

    A wildfire broke out on Wednesday in the forest region of Bares on Skyros, the southernmost island of the Sporades complex in central Aegean.

    Fourteen firemen with 7 fire engines are battling the flames assisted by 5 water-bombing aircraft.
