  • [01] FinMin holds successive meetings on course of economy, budget

    Government Vice President and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos held successive meetings with Alternate Finance Ministers Filippos Sahinidis and Pantelis Economou on Tuesday to coordinate government efforts ahead of an upcoming visit by representatives of the EC-ECB-IMF "troika" on Aug. 22.

    Venizelos was briefed on the state of revenues and spending, and, in general, on economic figures regarding the implementation of the ongoing budget and the crucial mid-term fiscal restructuring programme.

    He also met with Bank of Greece governor George Provopoulos for a briefing on the state of the domestic banking sector.

    Meanwhile, Venizelos continued a series of telephone contacts with Eurozone counterparts regarding economic developments in the European Union.

    [02] FinMin on agreement with Finland regarding 2nd support package

    Government Vice President and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos clarified on Tuesday statements regarding Finland's participation in a second support package for Greece, noting that "Greece and Finland agreed, within the framework of a decision of the Eurozone Summit of July 21, to a financing scheme that allows the government and the parliament of Finland to decide over the participation of their country in the new aid package to Greece, through the EFSF."

    He added that "the financing scheme that has been agreed to between the two countries will be submitted for ratification to the Eurogroup's representatives of ministers."

    [03] Bourse edges up in slow trading

    The composite index of the Athens Stock Exchange edged above the 1,000-point level on Tuesday mostly on the back of three heavily trades shares: Coca Cola 3E, PPC and OTE. The positive session came in contrast to the bullish trend in other European markets, finally ending at 1,012.52 - an increase of 2.16 percent.

    Turnover was a low 47.768 million euros.

    The Big Cap index rose 1.72 pct, the Mid Cap index ended 0.38 pct higher and the Small Cap index lost 0.51 pct.

    The sectors of Food & Beverages (6.84 pct), Utilities (4.64 pct) and Trade (3.86 pct) scored the strongest gains, while Utilities (-7.14 pct) and Financial Services (-2.42 pct) suffered the heaviest percentage losses of the day. Broadly, decliners trailed advancers by 57 to 68 with another 49 issues unchanged.

    Sector indices ended as follows:

    Oil & Gas: +0.59%

    The stocks with the highest turnover were National Bank, DEH and OPAP.

    [04] Bond issue brings 1.3 bln euros; yield at 4.5%

    The Greek state generated 1.3 billion euros from a bond issue on Tuesday for 13-week bonds, with an average yield of 4.5 percent, down from 4.58 percent in a previous such bond issue.

    The issue was oversubscribed by 2.95 times.

    [06] Man fatally shoots son-in-law

    A 72-year-old man shot and fatally injured his 32-year-old son-in-law early Tuesday morning in front of his wife (and the suspect's daughter) in a Cretan village.

    The couple reportedly had a quarrel in their home, moments before the alleged perpetrator, who was present at the scene, fired at the victim with a shotgun. The suspect later turned himself in to police.

    Authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

    [07] Tourist found dead in Rethimno sea region

    A French tourist was found dead in the sea at Bali in Rethimno, on the island of Crete, on Tuesday afternoon. He was vacationing in the region. Swimmers noticed the elderly man at Livadi beach and brought him ashore. A medical examination will ascertain whether the tourist drowned or died of a previous medical condition.

    [08] Minoan era stone seal discovered in western Crete

    A Minoan-era stone seal is the most important archaeological find during this year's excavation works at the Minoan peak sanctuary on Mt. Vryssina, south of the Cretan port city.

    The deep red-coloured jasper quadrangular seal is the only -- up to present day -- evidence of the presence of hieroglyphic Minoan writing in western Crete.

    [09] Burglary at office of Thessaloniki deputy

    A burglary occurred at the office of ruling PASOK party MP Eva Kaili off a Thessaloniki avenue.

    According to police, the burglary was ascertained and reported on Tuesday by an office employee. The burglars removed two PCs.

    [10] Wildfire near Rethymno

    A wildfire broke out on Tuesday in the region of Agios Mamas in Rethymno prefecture, on the island of Crete, and was partially under control by Tuesday afternoon.

    The fire was raging on two fronts, one of which is located in remote region.

    [11] Foreign nationals arrested for drugs on Rhodes

    Two Albanian nationals, aged 34 and 41, were arrested on the popular holiday island of Rhodes on felony drug trafficking charges after five kilos of hashish were located in their residence.

    Additionally, police discovered numerous brand-name clothing of all sizes, expensive but opened perfume bottles and sunglasses in the residence, leading to a probe into the possibility of a home break-in ring.

    The two men will be sent before a Rhodes prosecutor.
