  • [01] Karamanlis criticizes gov't, Protopapas reacts

    Athens, 08/12/03 (ANA)

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Costas Karamanlis on Saturday responded to the government's criticism, albeit indirectly and renewed his political proposal for the inclusion of other parties' voters to ND.

Speaking during an open rally in Menidi, northwestern Athens, he said "this is not the time for tactical openings (to voters), rather it is the time to open our hearts and reach out to all Greek voters".

"We are asking for the trust of even those that do not vote for us. Since, we need everyone's trust, if not their agreement, to implement our reformist work. We may disagree politically, but we do not hate each other and we can have coincidence of aims, one such example is to have all Greek children attend schools during the morning hours," he said.

Karamanlis stressed that his party has left behind the dividing lines of the past.

Commenting on the everyday problems and the critical problems of the Menidi region, he said that the time of promises has gone for good, adding that the political school of thought he subscribes to is allergic to pre-election promises.

He also spoke of unemployment, infrastructure problems, the bad condition of the road system and problems faced by the schools of the area, criticizing the government for delays in the compensation payment for land appropriations, which was necessary for the construction of the Olympic Village. He stressed that ND was committed to create a team to resolve the issue, if it does not get resolved by the elections.

The ND leader also spoke of work related accidents in construction projects in the area, the drug problem and the living conditions of repatriated Greeks settled in Menidi.

Mass Media Minister and government spokesman Christos Protopapas, responded to Karamanlis' criticism, noting that "it is good of Mr. Karamanlis that even now in 2003, he remembered that Greeks are not divided. But between parties there are political differences, concerning what each serves. He (Karamanlis) avoids this discussion, he hides it, because he knows that his policies do not serve the citizen, but only the big (economic) interests".

[02] Communist party leader attacks mainstream parties during rally

    Athens, 08/12/03 (ANA)

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Secretary General Aleka Papariga attacked both the ruling PASOK party and the main opposition New Democracy party, while addressing a rally in the Athens district of Peristeri on Sunday on the 85th anniversary of her party's founding.

Papariga reiterated KKE's proposal on the need to create an alliance between anti-imperialist and anti-monopoly forces to enable the people's movement to become more effective.

Papariga said in her address that imperialism is not unbeatable. It is facing problems and all its weaknesses have become obvious, while it is finding difficulty in reproducing itself.

The KKE secretary general further said starvation, unemployment, poverty, insecurity, privatizations, intracapitalist conflicts, war, racism and the wave of immigration are not symptoms and consequences of a specific liberal or socialdemocrat management but are inseparable elements of the modern-day capitalist system itself.

Referring to the next general election in the country, normally due in spring, Papariga stressed that ''the next election must not be lost for the people during the crucial period we are going through.''

She also noted that ''nothing will change and matters will become worse if workers vote for ND to punish and give PASOK a lesson. The more one party continues to transfuse votes to the other the more the ordeal of the Greek people will increase.''

We hope that the neighboring country, and mainly its leadership, aligns with human rights and the other democratic practices that are in force in the European Union. Athens News Agency's (ANA) Managing Director Nicolas Voulelis stressed that digital technology has the ability to abolish borders and bring people closer together, but it does table questions, such as ''how true is this for all the citizens of the world? How great are the limitations in the dissemination of information and how drastic is the forced guidance of news coverage internationally?''

He presented data gathered in recent studies that were conducted in Europe, noting that today the Internet has overcome the periodical press and covers 10 per cent of the mass media market, while the market share of the magazines stood at 8 per cent, television at 41 per cent, radio at 28 per cent and newspapers at 13 per cent.
