[01] Danuta Hübner dans la Vallée d'Aoste (Italie): les zones
montagneuses offrent des atouts que l'Europe doit apprendre à mieux
exploiter
Danuta Hübner, la Commissaire responsable de la Politique Régionale, se
rend dans la Vallée d’Aoste les 16 et 17 janvier. Elle rencontrera le
Président de la Région autonome, M. Augusto Rollandin, et les membres du
gouvernement régional pour discuter du nouveau programme de développement
régional, soutenu par l'Union européenne. En se rendant au Fort de Bard,
elle verra concrètement comment la région s'appuie sur les
investissements européens pour développer le tourisme.
[02] Global crises to top discussions between EU and South Africa
European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel,
will visit South Africa to participate in the EU-South Africa Ministerial
Troika meeting on 15th and 16th January 2009. Together with Czech Foreign
Minister Schwarzenberg on behalf of the EU Presidency, Commissioner Michel
will hold discussions with South Africa on topics ranging from the
international financial crisis, climate change, food security to new areas
of cooperation such as energy or transport. The meeting will also be an
opportunity to examine various crises situations in Africa and in the world,
notably in Zimbabwe, the DRC and the Middle East. The event is part of the
regular high-level dialogue the EU keeps with South Africa as emerging
regional power and strategic partner of the EU.
[03] Commissioner Hübner to highlight pivotal role and benefits for
Mezzogiorno from strengthened co-operation and development in Mediterranean
On 16 January, Danuta Hübner, Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy,
is in the Mezzogiorno at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio
Napolitano. In the city of Reggio Calabria, she will address academics,
authorities and employers from European and North African countries on the
importance of cooperation between the Mezzogiorno, the rest of Europe and
the Mediterranean.
[04] Euro area annual inflation down to 1.6%
Euro area annual inflation was 1.6% in December 2008, down from 2.1% in
November. A year earlier the rate was 3.1%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in
December 2008. EU annual inflation was 2.2% in December 2008, down from
2.8% in November. A year earlier the rate was 3.2%. Monthly inflation was -
0.1% in December 2008. These figures come from Eurostat.
[05] Commission clears acquisition of Segebel by Centrica
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Segebel S.A. of Belgium by
Centrica Overseas Holdings Limited, belonging to the group Centrica plc of
the UK. Centrica is active in electricity and gas production, energy
product supply and trading, gas shipping and gas storage. Segebel is active
in electricity generation and the supply of electricity and gas. The
operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
[06] Ministerial meeting on the automotive industry - Brussels –
16.01.2009
In light of the deteriorating situation of automotive industry in the EU,
Günter Verheugen, Vice President of the European Commission, has invited
ministers from all Member States to meet in Brussels on Friday 16 January.
The purpose of the meeting is to review the situation in the sector and
discuss existing and future measures at national level and in particular
the need for coordination at European level.
[07] Environment: Final amendment to Dangerous Substances Directive adopted
More than 600 substances have been included in the latest and final
amendment to the Dangerous Substances Directive, which was adopted today by
the European Commission. It includes more than 200 substances that have
been identified as causing cancer, genetic mutation, or as having an effect
on reproduction. The directive, which will be replaced by the Regulation on
the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures from
20 January, has been amended for the 31st time since 1967 to take into
account technical progress in the identification and classification of
hazardous substances. Under the REACH regulation on chemicals, substances
classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or having reproductive toxic effects
may need authorisation to be used or placed on the market. For further

[08] Mergers: Commission approves proposed acquisition of Broström by A.P.
Møller-Mærsk
The European Commission has cleared under the EC Merger Regulation the
proposed acquisition of Broström of Sweden by A.P. Møller-Mærsk of
Denmark. After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the
transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the
European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.
