[02] Telecoms: Commission seeks more evidence for decision on proposed
Finnish broadband deregulation
The European Commission has informed the Finnish telecoms regulator,
Viestintävirasto or FICORA (Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority),
of its serious doubts over the compatibility with EU law of its draft
regulatory measures on the Finnish wholesale broadband access market.
Finland's regulator has not provided enough evidence to justify the
deregulation of access to the incumbent operators' broadband networks it
proposes, namely that certain geographic markets ready for deregulation
show different competitive conditions from the rest of the country. The
Commission now has until 5 March 2009 to decide whether the regulator can
adopt its proposed measures. The regulator may not adopt the measures until
the Commission approves them.
[03] November 2008 compared with October 2008 - Industrial producer prices
down by 1.9% in euro area; down by 2.1% in EU27
According to Eurostat, in November 2008 compared with October 2008, the
industrial producer price index fell by 1.9% in the euro area and by 2.1%
in the EU27. In October, prices decreased by 0.8% and 1.1% respectively. In
November 2008 compared with November 2007, industrial producer prices
increased by 3.3% in the euro area and by 4.1% in the EU27.
[04] Commissioner Potocnik attends the European launch of the
"International Year of Astronomy 2009" in Prague
Today at 15.00 pm in Prague, the EU Commissioner for Science and Research
will inaugurate the European launch of the "International Year of Astronomy
2009" (IYA2009), organised under the Czech Presidency. The "International
Year of Astronomy 2009" was proclaimed by the 62nd General Assembly of the
United Nations in December 2007 and celebrates the 400th anniversary of the
first recorded astronomical observations with a telescope by Galileo
Galilei. EU Commissioner Potocnik will highlight the EU's leading position
in all fields of astronomy and will outline the European Commission's role
in supporting Research Infrastructures in the field of astronomy. The
speech will be available on Commissioner Potocnik's website: <a

Rediffusion
[05] Joint statement by Eurogas and the European Commission
In the context of the current dispute between Gazprom and Naftogaz and the
reported very serious reductions of the volumes of natural gas supplied to
Europe, the European organization of natural gas industries (Eurogas) met
with Commissioner Piebalgs today to exchange views on the latest
developments and related measures. Eurogas and the European Commission
expressed their strong concerns of the impact of the dispute on European
customers and called for an immediate resumption of the natural gas
supplies to Europe, urging both parties to respect their contractual supply
and transit obligations.
