MIDDAY EXPRESSNews from the Communication Directorate General's midday briefingNouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Direction Générale Communicationb05/09/08[01] Commission welcomes Colombia's decision to join European digital TV standardThe Commission today welcomed the Colombian national regulator's (the National Commission for Television CNTV) selection the European Digital Video Broadcasting standard (DVB-T) for the country's digital terrestrial TV. The terrestrial DVB standard, DVB-T, has already been adopted in Europe and by over 120 countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. The decision by the Colombian regulator will confirm the EU's commitment to working with Colombia and the rest of Latin America to better exploit the potential of ICT and media. Other Latin American countries (such as Peru, Venezuela, Argentina or Chile) are expected to decide soon about their digital TV standard. In August 2007, Uruguay was the first Latin American country to choose to use the DVB family of standards for its digital TV needs (IP/07/1269).[02] EU - Ukraine Summit - An EU surplus in trade in goods with Ukraine of 10 bn euro in 2007On the occasion of the European Union - Ukraine summit, which will take place on 9 September in Evian in France, Eurostat issues data on trade in goods between Ukraine and the EU. These data show that between 2000 and 2007, EU trade in goods with Ukraine more than tripled in value: exports rose from 5.5 billion euro to 22.4 bn, while imports increased from 4.8 bn to 12.4 bn. As a result, the EU surplus in trade with Ukraine increased from 0.6 bn in 2000 to 10.0 bn in 2007. The share of Ukraine in the EU's total external trade in goods has more than doubled between 2000 and 2007. In 2007, Ukraine accounted for 2% of EU exports and 1% of EU imports, and was the EU's 16th most important trading partner.[03] Mariann Fischer Boel attends the 17th World Meat Congress, Cape Town, South AfricaMariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, will visit South Africa from Sunday 7 September to Tuesday 9 September to attend the 17th World Meat Congress which will take place in Cape Town and where she will give a keynote speech on "Meeting the Policy Challenges". The World Meat Congress is a bi-annual event for meat professionals from all over the world. Among them, a number of top executives from various leading EU meat companies are set to be present. The European Union will have a stand at the congress with the aim to provide information on the quality and safety standards of EU meat. The trip is also a great opportunity not only to strengthen EU-South Africa agricultural trade links but also to stimulate trade flows with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, besides fostering business opportunities on both sides. During her visit, Commissioner Fischer Boel plans to meet the South African Agriculture Minister, Lulama Xingwana and the Deputy Minister responsible for Trade and Industry, Rob Davies. On Monday 8 September, Commissioner Fischer Boel will be giving a Public Lecture on Global Trade in Agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch.[04] Commission clears acquisition of subsidiaries of Banco Sabadell, by Zurich and Banco SabadellThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of BanSabadell Vida, SA de Seguros y Reaseguros (BanSabadell Vida), BanSabadell Pensiones, E.G.F.P., SA and BanSabadell Seguros Generales, SA de Seguros y Reaseguros (BanSabadell Generales), all of Spain and currently wholly-owned subsidiaries of Banco Sabadell, by Zurich Vida, Compañía de Seguros y Reaseguros, SA (Zurich Vida) of Spain and Zurich España, Compañía de Seguros y Reaseguros, SA (Zurich Generales) also of Spain, belonging to the Zurich Group of Switzerland, and Banco de Sabadell, SA of Spain. Zurich is an international insurance group and Zurich Vida covers life insurance, whilst Zurich Generales deals with non-life insurance. Banco Sabadell is active in retail banking in Spain. BanSabadell Vida handles life insurance in Spain, BanSabadell Generales covers non-life insurance. BanSabadell Pensiones sells pension products in Spain.
