[01] EU provides extra €40 million to the Palestinian Authority
The European Union has provided an additional €40 million to the
Palestinian Authority to help meet its recurrent expenditures and ensure
the continued delivery of public services. The funds will be used to help
pay for salaries and pensions, social allowances to vulnerable Palestinian
families and fuel for the power plant to provide electricity to the people
of Gaza. This amount comes on top of the €440 million that the European
Commission pledged last December in Paris to assist the Palestinians in
2008 . Also today, the EU and the Palestinian Authority (PA) have launched -
using part of that €440 million sum - a €37 million public
infrastructure investment programme that will bring benefits to the
Palestinian people by improving the delivery of public services. The
programme will help to upgrade public infrastructure in areas identified by
the Palestinian Authority as priorities for new investment, including
security and the rule of law and electricity. All the funds are channelled
through the European Union assistance mechanism for the Palestinians,
PEGASE.
[02] Better access to scientific articles on EU-funded research: European
Commission launches online pilot project
Fast and reliable access to research results, especially via the Internet,
can drive innovation, advance scientific discovery and support the
development of a strong knowledge-based economy. The European Commission
wants to ensure that the results of the research it funds under the EU's
7th Research Framework Programme (FP7) with more than € 50 billion from
2007 - 2013 are disseminated as widely and effectively as possible to
guarantee maximum exploitation and impact in the world of researchers and
beyond. The Commission today launched a pilot project that will give
unrestricted online access to EU-funded research results, primarily
research articles published in peer reviewed journals, after an embargo
period of between 6 and 12 months. The pilot will cover around 20% of the
FP7 programme budget in areas such as health, energy, environment, social
sciences and information and communication technologies.
[03] Concentrations: la Commission autorise le projet de concentration
entre Kenwood et JVC
La Commission européenne a autorisé, en application du règlement de
l’UE sur les concentrations, le projet de concentration entre Kenwood
Corporation of Japan et Victor Company of Japan («JVC»), tous deux
fournisseurs d’équipements électroniques. Après examen, la Commission
est parvenue à la conclusion que l’opération n'entraverait pas
significativement une concurrence effective dans l'Espace économique
européen (EEE) ou une partie substantielle de celui-ci.
[04] June construction output down by 0.6% in the euro area and 1.5% in the
EU
In the construction sector, seasonally-adjusted production decreased by
0.6% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU in June 2008, compared with the
previous month. In May, production increased by 0.1% and 0.7% respectively.
Compared with June 2007, output dropped by 2.4% in the euro area and by
1.8% in the EU. These are first estimates by Eurostat.
