[01] Emissions trading: Commission to publish verified emissions data for
2007
According to the data recorded in the CITL by 8:00 CET, the submitted 2007
verified emissions data did not yet reach the level of at least 80% of 2006
emissions. Therefore, the CITL will not give public access to installation-
level verified emissions data today. Installations participating in the EU
ETS are required to submit data on 2007 verified emissions to Member State
registries by 31 March 2008. Member State registries automatically transmit
this information to the Community Independent Transaction Log ("CITL"). The
CITL will give unlimited, "real time" public access to submitted verified
2007 emissions data as soon as it has received data for installations that
were responsible for at least 80% of the emissions recorded in 2006. For
further information: the verified emissions data for 2007 will be published
at: <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/environment/climat/emission/citl_en.htm">http://ec.europa.eu/environment/climat/emission/citl_en.htm.
[02] Successful strike against euro coin counterfeiters
The Italian Carabinieri with support from the European Commission (OLAF)
successfully uncovered an important counterfeiters' network, arresting six
persons and preventing thousands of counterfeit euro coins from entering
into circulation. The results of this major operation are being presented
today to the public by the Italian authorities and experts from OLAF. At
European level, cooperation took place between the Italian authorities and
the European Commission/European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). The latter is
hosting the European Technical and Scientific Centre (ETSC) which
coordinates the technical analysis of counterfeit euro coins. For the
counterfeit coins in this specific case, the ETSC strongly supported the
investigations by the Carabinieri through a series of analyses and reports
on materials used and other technical characteristics. This significantly
contributed to the positive result of the operation. From a technical point
of view, the type of counterfeits discovered are considered as the most
sophisticated type of counterfeit euro coins detected in circulation until
now. In total, more than 25.000 coins of this type have been detected in
Europe since mid 2005 and quantities have been increasing in 2007. Although
overall the numbers of counterfeit euro coins detected in circulation
increased over the years, the ratio of counterfeit coins detected vs.
genuine coins in circulation is extremely low (approx. 1/66 000 for the
three bigger denominations). The European Commission actively supports
national authorities and the coin operating industry with technical and
practical expertise to fight counterfeiting of euro coins. (For further
